Fall Gardening Tips

  • As you tidy up your garden this fall, don't feel pressured to clear away every leaf. Those leaves are busy breaking down to enrich your soil, while also keeping plant roots insulated. They even create safe spaces for local wildlife to nest and rest.
  • Shrubs that bloom on old wood should only be pruned immediately after they flower. Shrubs that bloom from new wood should be pruned in the spring. It is ok to let your garden rest and defoliate naturally during fall. Fall pruning, especially on old wood shrubs, can prevent them from blooming the next spring.
  • Fall is a great time to plant bulbs like daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths for early spring blooms!
  • As we move into winter, resist the urge to remove ice from your shrubs. This well-intentioned act can often do more harm than the ice itself. The ice will melt naturally, usually without problems. If heavy ice breaks, branches, prune them in early winter while the plant is dormant.
